The Academy of Ancient Music has named Jonathan Manners as its new chief executive from January 2014. Currently head of music administration at English National Opera, Manners replaces Michael Garvey, who leaves in December to become director of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales.

‘I am delighted to be taking over as the AAM’s next chief executive at such an exciting time in the organisation’s history,’ said Manners. ‘I look forward very much to leading the AAM in the chapter beyond its 40th anniversary, and in particular to developing further the new record label, AAM Records, the association at the Barbican and residency in Cambridge, and the orchestra’s international touring programme.’

Manners has worked at ENO since 2009 and in 2010 co-founded Resonus Classics, the world’s first solely digital classical music record label. Prior to the ENO, he worked for the Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique, Monteverdi Choir and English Baroque Soloists.

Founded in 1973 by Christopher Hogwood, the AAM has released over 300 CDs and is currently celebrating its 40th anniversary. Associate ensemble at London’s Barbican Centre and orchestra-in-residence at the University of Cambridge, the AAM also performs internationally on a regular basis. Richard Egarr succeeded Hogwood as the orchestra’s music director in 2006.
